Facebook helps find stolen cars A recent spike in car thefts has police concerned, with six stolen vehicles being reported last weekend alone, but social media is playing a part in helping owners recover them. Four scooters have been stolen in the past seven days and all have been recovered. Police say scooters are becoming a “popular target” for joyriders, and they’re concerned by the recent spike, which includes various types of vehicles. A number of the thefts involved vehicles where the keys had been left in the ignition, making them easily attainable. “This current spike is certainly a concern and we would encourage everyone to lock their vehicle and remove valuable items from parked vehicles,” says sergeant Dave Prentice. “Some people are making it very easy for thieves to take their vehicles. I would recommend anything that is going to make your car a less attractive

Diverse Engineering’s staff have worked on smaller jobs on their boats while they are sailing. You might hear of one or two in Nelson but there’s like six or seven every week now and that’s what concerns me.” Peta-Marie initially told other users of the Facebook pages to call the police if they spotted the car anywhere, but after adding her own phone number she received a call from someone who knew where it was. “I went there and, talking to the neighbours, I found it had been there for a few days. The neighbours didn’t know it had been stolen.” Peta-Marie believed it was taken for a joyride because expensive items such as aftershave and Ray Bans sunglasses had been left in the car but were still there when it was recovered.

Just last week a 2007 Ford Ranger that was stolen from Richmond, had been recovered after it was posted on the Nelson Police Facebook Page and Dave agrees that social media was helping victims, as the publicity was likely to put more pressure on the offender to abandon the vehicle. Police statistics show that there have been 146 unlawful takings in the 12 months leading up to June 2014. However, that figure wasn’t necessarily 146 stolen cars because it also includes attempted theft and the theft of trailers. Dave says reports of unlawful theft of vehicles is something that came in “peaks and troughs” throughout the year, with no reports coming through some weeks. He reiterated that locking your vehicle can go a long way to prevent theft, and believed most of the scooter thefts could have been prevented if they had been locked with a chain.

Alex Herbert believes all the hard work and long hours he has spent in the kitchen are starting to pay off, after he was announced as the winner of the Nelson Hospitality Award’s Up and Coming Chef section. The 22 year old, originally from England but grew up in Golden Bay, is the Harbour Light Bistro’s demi-chef de partie, and says the win was a big surprise and reward for the work he has put in over the past two and half years in the hospitality industry. “I wasn’t expecting it at all. But I work pretty hard,” he says. “There have been a lot of nights when I’ve been in the kitchen at 11 o’clock and I could’ve started at eight in the morning. It shows that the hard work pays off in the end.” Alex contested the Up and Coming Chef section against four other chefs from across the region. The competition featured a “mystery box” format, where all contestants were given the same ingredients. Included amongst the items were a chicken breast and streaky bacon, plus an assortment of standard vegetables. Alex made a chicken breast stuffed with a citrus mousse-

Golden girl returns home Two weeks after winning gold at the Commonwealth Games, lawn bowler Jo Edwards has finally arrived back in Nelson – and to a very warm reception. Jo, who won the women’s singles in Glasgow, was the only Nelson athlete to pick up a gold medal at the Games. To greet her at Nelson Airport on Friday night was a loud crowd of about 30 people, including members of the United Bowling Club – which produced two other medallists in Val Smith and Amy Mcilroy – and her family. Jo told the Nelson Weekly that winning gold in Glasgow was one of her proudest moments. “Each and every one of them has a certain

place in my heart. The first one is always pretty cool but I think 12 years down the track, especially with the amount of young players coming through, it’s just a real achievement.” She was a little overwhelmed with the reception at Nelson Airport. “It was a little worrying thinking no one would be here, but it’s just fantastic. Everyone who was here plays a big part in what I do, and while I get the rewards, at the end of the day there’s a big team behind me,” she says. “We’re only a little club at United, but it produces some amazing talent.”

A building and everything in it, including 13 go-karts, computer timing equipment, safety gear, parts and tools, were destroyed in March, and the offenders responsible for the arson attack were never found. After four long months, the Tahunanui business has finally been able to offer its full services again, with Pro Karts officially back open. But Nick never expected it would take so long. “It’s taken a long time. It’s been a relatively stressful and full-on winter, trying to get everything going and trying to keep what’s existing going, like our laser tag,” he says. Nick, who has been in business for nearly eight years, was able to run some of the karts he had left – but not ones suitable for children – as he wanted to keep his “name out there”. “We didn’t want people to think we had closed down because of the fire. It was important to keep our name and our brand alive enough that when we did open that people still knew we were around. “It was getting a bit like Groundhog Day, coming down every week with no results because things have taken so

But seeing the karts go round and the smiles on people’s faces has put me back on a high.” And although it has been an “extremely frustrating” four month wait, Nick remained relatively positive. “We’ve got a fleet of karts we’ve just imported from England and we’ve refurnished our other karts so the whole fleet is like new. I didn’t want to dwell on the negatives, just think about the positives; otherwise you get down too much.

Garin’s ELAE reaches Rockquest final ELAE don’t hold any grudges for not making the Nelson Smokefreerockquest final, but their notable omission was made even more glaring after the Garin College duo were selected for the national final next month. Anna Robinson and Olivia Nott, who are best friends, have been performing together for just over a year and a half. They previously went under the name Livvy and Anna, but have since merged their names together to create ELAE (pronounced L.A).

Anna says the pair are “so excited” to be able to perform at the national final in Auckland, after thinking their chance was over. “It’s a proud moment because we pushed through something that we thought was the end for us,” she says. “It shows that if you do keep trying then something good can come out of it.” Six bands and three solo/duos

were named in the national final, but ELAE were the only act from Nelson, with Oh Blok missing out. They were given a “highly commended”. ELAE is the only duo amongst the top three solo/duos, but Olivia, who is the younger sister of Broods members Caleb and Georgia Nott, didn’t believe that was an advantage. “We are different to the soloists because we have the opportunity to do harmonies, but it doesn’t mean it’s an advantage. Everyone is really talented.”

Seniors working for community

The Stoke Community Centre’s Social Seniors Club needs a new van to help pick up their “least mobile” members from Nelson, Stoke and Richmond, so they can enjoy the club’s daily meals and activities. So that’s why they have entered the Car Company Charity Drive competition, which is offering a prize of $10,000 for a group or organisation that is doing great things in our community. Looking out the window, the view out over the Arthur Ranges blanketed in snow is stunning at this time of year. It also reminds me that this is the time when things can get hazardous on the roads. I would encourage everyone to take a look at their tyres and wiper blades, and make sure they are fit for purpose. There’s no way you’re going to control a car with slick tyres on a wet or icy road. When you head off in the morning it’s essential that you take the time to clear your windows properly. Driving with your vision obscured is not only a risk to your health and welfare, but you could be liable for a $150 infringement if caught. The reality is it’s only going to take a few minutes to get the car ready to go, and in my view, the consequences of an accident far outweigh a few minute’s inconvenience in the morning. Some of the roads in our area do become impassable at times during winter. Just last week the Takaka Hill road was closed due to snow for a couple of hours at night. If you get caught out in a remote area you could be in for a cold and uncomfortable wait. Check the road and weather conditions if you are heading to the more remote areas, and if you have any doubts either postpone your trip or take a set of snow chains. Even around town we have areas that can ice up overnight. I’d ask everyone to slow down and take an extra bit of care, and increase your following distances.

Students from NMIT’s new beauty therapy programme have gifted three pamper packages to the SPCA, which will be raffled off on Monday for their Cupcake Day fundraiser. The pamper packages include services such as facials and massage, and are made by nine second-year students. As part of the Diploma in Beauty and Body Therapy course, students had to create a pamper package and market it. As well as being for sale, the students decided to donate three of the packages for Cupcake NMIT’s beauty therapy students, including Shay Cattlermole, Julie Crighton Day. Tristan Laubscher Southern Link debate: When decisions are made to build new roads and change traffic flows, it is usually to free up traffic-clogged town centres by building a bypass. A section of countryside is selected for the new road and the town is freed from its traffic burden. Here in Nelson the opposite is being demanded by a small-minded group who are ignoring the detrimental environmental and health effects the Southern Link will have on hundreds of families living in the Victory and Bishopdale areas, and Nelson as a whole. Rocks Road performs a very effective job as a bypass for the town centre. It makes absolutely no sense to put traffic back through built up areas. If someone was to suggest taking trucks off Whakatu Drive by building a new road along the Railway Reserve through Stoke on the grounds that the waterfront shouldn't have trucks on it, they would, quite rightly, be laughed at and ignored. A new road is not needed. It will not solve any of the claimed traffic issues in Nelson. All traffic will still be going through the Annesbrook roundabout. We need to look at longer term, sustainable traffic management. Car sharing, better public transport and park and ride schemes from Richmond. Ian Millward.

The Great Stoke Pallet Sale The Great Stoke Pallet Sale at McCashins Brewery generated a lot of interest with the public. Their unwanted stockpile of pallets were on sale for $2 each, with all proceeds going to Stoke School. Their massive collection of pallets were never all going to go, but around 150 wooden pallets were sold raising $300 for the school, which McCashins Brewery generously topped up to a total of $450. Auctioned Medals The rare collection of World War II medals that went up for auction drew a large crowd. Along with the medals was a portrait of the Nelson soldier who was awarded them and a letter he wrote to his family during the war. Auctioneer John Walker says the medals sold well and that it was also very nice to see they were bought by a local, so they can remain in the soldier’s community. Steampunker Group Nelson Steampunk group The Hickey Piks Southern Steamers had a wonderful response from the public after their Sunday afternoon tea at Melrose House. The group’s positive feedback may see their numbers rise and a lunchtime picnic at Rabbit Island last Sunday saw some new members join up. WW1’s first sailing recreated

As Rule Britannia filled the air and the thoughts of those gathered were with Nelson’s courageous WW1 service men and women, the first sailing was brought to life once more. Participants donned their WW1 uniforms in an open air ceremony that aimed to re-enact the brave footsteps of Nelson’s men and women as they prepared to set sail to war. Mayor Rachel Reese and Nelson RSA recreated the messages behind the stirring speeches that would have farewelled

our service people and others across New Zealand. Nelson City Council’s WW100 coordinator, Ian Barker, says the event was a great opportunity for everyone to understand the sense of honour, occasion and trepidation experienced by the heroic young Nelsonians. At the time of the sailing the war had just begun, the horrors of fighting were still to hit Nelson. A single wreath was laid to remember the loss of life on both sides of the trenches.

There was a sense of deja vu for Prime Minister John Key when he visited a Nelson company that has become a market leader in manufacturing concretecutting and polishing tools. Last Wednesday, the Prime Minister told staff and guests at Holer Diamond Tools on Main Road Hope that one of his first official duties as a Member of Parliament was to "unveil a concrete mixer". Then he cemented his concrete theme by commissioning Holer's new $1 million laser welder, which is used to manufacture diamondtipped concrete cutting tools. "It was the very first thing I unveiled as a Member of Parliament and I'm not talking about anything flash like this," he joked. Key has come a long way since then and so has Holer, which was started by Fred Holer in his garage in White's Road

Holer's Phil Mayer gave John Key a demonstration of the welder which is the only one of its kind in the southern hemisphere and just one of five in the world. Key told Holer's staff that innovative technology like their welder was helping strengthen the country's manufacturing sector. "A lot of what is happening right around New Zealand is the importation of equipment from overseas which lifts the output for New Zealand and allows export into markets around the world," he says.

In the Grade 1 game between Nayland College and Garin College it was definitely a game of two halves. Nayland were on the back foot from the get go as coach Trevor Olley has struggled to field a full line up for the past eight games due to injury and illness. A reshuffled mid court could not match the experience of Garin, particularly in the second quarter when they were out scored 12–2. Fishing with

Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club The 2014/15 Dawnbreakers Fishing Club season gets ready to kick off on August 24. Some big changes to the club over the last two years has seen membership steadily growing and it looks like it’s not going to slow down any time soon. A change in venue to the Tasman Bay Cruising Club will see our once a month Club Day, on either Saturday evenings or as Sunday afternoon socials, in the heart of the Nelson Marina. The club season extends eight months from October through to May, with prizegiving in June. Boat fishers, kayakers, jetskiers, land based anglers, divers and fresh water fisher folk are all welcome with senior men, ladies and junior sections to enter. On the monthly club social days there will be a sausage sizzle, raffle and our usual fish of the month awards along with a 'bugger' award. The club has had some excellent speakers in previous seasons and social events who gave talks on things like boating education, MFish (now MPI), commercial fishing, the rescue helicopter as well as club members giving informative talks. This year the club continues with its length-based competition to continue promoting catch and release fishing as well as only taking enough for a feed. It has always been a concern of the club having its members taking breeding size snapper so they can weigh them in for club points, when many of the members said they would have preferred to release them. We took this on board and have changed to a length-based system where a member can catch a 20lb snapper, take a picture of it on an official measure board then release the fish. Photos would then be emailed into

the weighmaster and a point per centimetre system will decide who has the biggest fish and most points. We have a point formula worked out that will make a 20lb snapper earn the same points as a 20kg Kingfish as we see those size fish as “Pin fish.” (A pinfish is a fish that reaches that "magic" weight for that species, like 20lb snapper, 7lb blue cod etc). Accumulated monthly points will go towards a range of trophies that the club has on offer throughout the season for individual classes, as well as for longest fish in various species. The club calendar last year included trips away to Okiwi Bay, French Pass and Havelock and will be repeated again this year all going well with the weather. Last season we also used local charter boat operator Seabird charters for those club members that don’t have boats big enough to get up to D’Urville Island so they can have a taste of some of the hot action the area offers. We have found Barry and Lynley Bird excellent operators that have given our club members some great fishing experiences. This season we will also be having some club outings targeting areas closer to home. Also another benefit of belonging to a club is that some weekends members go out and find a certain bait or area is working better than others and as a club we can share that information to members, so everyone benefits. But you need to be a member and on our email list to get this up to date information. The club will be holding an Open Day on the August 24 at the Tasman Bay Cruising Club starting at 2pm. Swimmers qualify for nationals Nelson swimmers used Saturday's Winter Splash meet to book their place at next month’s Swimming NZ Short Course National Championship. Hosted by the Nelson South Swimming Club at the ASB Aquatic Centre, the Winter Splash meet saw 96 competitors take part, with some already qualified for the national championship in Wellington and others who were hoping to sneak under the strict qualifying times. Thirteen year old Daniel Trevur-

za, who competes out of the Motueka Swimming Club but has been training with Nelson South Swimming Club, was one person who managed to book his spot at the eleventh hour, qualifying for the 50m and 100m breaststroke. As did Nelson South's Luke Kelly, who secured another qualifying time for short course nationals in the 400m individual medley. Tasman Swim Club will send a team of six to short course nationals, including 18 year old Madisen Stanley who has now

qualified in seven different events. Also representing Tasman in Wellington will be; Sam McKenzie, Caitlin Delany, Talya Harwood, Cara Pearson and Thomas Heaton. Clara Foster, 14, from Nelson South showed she is in good form, with three personal bests on Saturday. She will be joined by team-mates Ellie Rukuwai, Eddie Neill, Luke Kelly, Samantha Trevurza, Bailee Spriggs and Kaiori McGuinniety at nationals, which begin on September 2.
